The beginning of fall is filled with fun festivities. One highlight was the Huntington Unity Fun Day Parade & Fair, an event our library participated in Saturday, Sept. 13.
Huntington Unity Fun Day has brought together organizations across Huntington Township since 2010 to celebrate the community’s diverse cultures and resources. SHPL staff helped kick off the day by walking in a parade down Oakwood Road with 35 groups including local school districts and not-for-profits.
The parade route started at Huntington High School and moved toward Stimson Middle School. Along the way library staff waved to parade watchers and excitedly spotted familiar patron faces.
A crowd waiting at Stimson cheered for our library staff as the parade concluded and flowed into the Huntington Unity Fun Day Fair. Staff joined the sea of tables ready to continue the day representing the SHPL and interacting with community members.
Community Outreach Coordinator & Spanish Services Librarian Georgina is part of the Huntington Unity Fun Day planning committee. Georgina shared why our library values getting involved in events like Huntington Unity Fun Day.
“We are always looking for opportunities to encourage library usage, and this event provides the perfect platform to meet new patrons, give away library swag, and answer any questions they might have,” Georgina said.
Huntington Unity Fun Day ended successfully with over 150 visits to the SHPL table. Staff brought out hula hoops for contests and everyone enjoyed the DJ’s music.
Our library was proud to celebrate and support the community. The event reflects our mission to strengthen the community by fostering connections.
“It's incredibly important for us to be a part of such a fun-filled community event, allowing us to connect with our patrons, families, and other library users outside of the library’s walls,” Georgina said. “One of our favorite parts of the event is hearing attendees walk by and exclaim, ‘Yay, the library is here’!”
