Community Service at the Library

 

The following community service opportunities are available to
 SHPL cardholders currently in grades 6-12. 
Participants must sign up with their own SHPL card in order 
to receive community service.
Community service letters are emailed within 2 weeks after the program.
Space may be limited.
Additional community service opportunities may be available to sign up 
for at Teen Advisory Board meetings.

Pink Pumpkins: a Community Service Program

Tuesday, October 7

7:00-8:00pm

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Join us as we make pink pumpkins and pink ribbon pins to bring awareness to the disease. One hour of community service. Registration begins September 26 

 

Wrap Our Heroes in Gratitude: a Community Service Program

Saturday, October 18

1:00-3:00pm

Support our troops by decorating slap bracelets for Operation Gratitude and say thank you to those who serve. One hour community service.

No registration required. 

 

Teen Advisory Board

Tuesday, October 21 – Huntington Manor Junior Firefighters

7:00-8:00pm

The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) is an active community service organization made up of South Huntington teens who work together to make a difference in our library.  Tell us your ideas for community service and other programs.  Ms. Jen & Ms. Elizabeth will lead this meeting with what the YA Library is already planning for you. Meetings are usually held on the third Tuesday night of the month at 7pm and feature a community guest. Community service hours are provided.  New members are always welcome!  

No registration is required.

 

Energy Efficiency Bookmarks: a Community Service Program

6:00-8:00pm

Drop in and help color bookmarks to spread the word about this month’s sustainability theme: energy efficiency. Make four bookmarks and earn a maximum of one hour of community service.

Long Live the Monarch: a Community Service Program

Wednesday, October 29

7:00-8:00pm

Did you know the Monarch butterfly is internationally endangered?  Find out about the Monarch's 3,000 mile migration, why the population is on the decline, and what you can do here on Long Island. Help assemble packets of milkweed seeds, the plant monarch caterpillars exclusively eat, for you and other library patrons to take home and grow. Registration begins October 17.

 

Operation Cheer Cards & Ornaments: a Community Service Program

Wednesday, November 5

7:00-8:00pm

Help spread joy to deployed troops and veterans by creating handmade ornaments and cards. One hour of community service. Registration begins October 24.
