This month, our shelves are getting an infusion of fresh content for all tastes, from epic fantasy adventures to nostalgic martial arts throwdowns. We're particularly excited to highlight some of the most anticipated releases, including the stunning live-action adaptation of the beloved animated classic How to Train Your Dragon and the next chapter in the Karate Kid franchise.
How to Train Your Dragon (August 12)
The live-action adaptation follows Hiccup, a young Viking who, instead of killing his first dragon, befriends a rare and injured Night Fury he names Toothless. Their unlikely bond challenges his village's deeply ingrained hatred for dragons and exposes the truth behind their conflict. Together, the two must prove that humans and dragons can coexist, all while facing a monstrous dragon that controls the others.
The Karate Kid: Legends (August 26)
After moving to New York City, kung fu prodigy Li Fong (Ben Wang) struggles to let go of a tragic past. When a new friend needs his help, he enters a karate competition and is forced to merge the fighting styles of two different mentors, Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), to win. Li must overcome his own trauma and master a new hybrid fighting style to defeat a formidable local karate champion.
The Accountant 2 (August 12)
In the sequel to the 2016 film, Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is drawn back into the world of assassins and government agents after the murder of his former boss. Tasked with finishing the investigation, Christian teams up with his estranged brother to unravel a deadly conspiracy involving human trafficking and a ruthless network of killers. As they dig deeper, they become targets themselves, fighting to survive and expose the truth while confronting the demons of their past.
Freaky Tales (August 12)
An anthology film composed of four interconnected stories set in Oakland, California that take place on the same night in 1987. The movie follows a diverse cast of characters, including punk rockers, a female rap duo, and a hitman, as they navigate a city brimming with real-life historical events and a strange, unifying supernatural energy.
Barron’s Cove (August 12)
Following the tragic death of his young son, Barron, a grieving father with a violent past named Caleb becomes consumed by a quest for the truth. Believing the official police ruling of suicide is a cover-up, he kidnaps one of the boys who was with his son at the time of the accident—the son of a powerful and corrupt politician. As a frenzied manhunt ensues, Caleb is drawn into a tangled web of secrets and corruption, forcing him to confront his own demons and decide how far he is willing to go for justice.
