Program Description : Dr. Sarah Beetham will present a lecture, Sentinels Keep Watch. She recently received her Ph.D. in the Department of Art History at the University of Delaware, with a focus on sculpture in the United States. Her current book project, "Monumental Crisis: Accident, Vandalism, and the Civil War Citizen Soldier," considers soldier monuments that have been damaged or altered in the decades since they were dedicated. In their ubiquity, soldier monuments have become an accepted and often unquestioned part of the urban fabric. But this study probes moments when that narrative has been disrupted. In the century and a half since Appomattox, soldier monuments have been moved, reinterpreted, amended, rededicated, vandalized, destroyed accidentally, neglected, and weathered by the elements. A community's role in causing or rectifying these moments of monumental crisis can illuminate the role of memorials in national conversations and the nature of public memory itself. All welcome.
