  8. Writing Short Stories
    Time : 6:30 PM

    Details : This 6-week workshop focuses on the art and techniques of short story writing. Through group discussions and constructive critique, this workshop will help participants write the most powerful and effective short stories their imaginations can come up with, in a variety of styles and genres. We'll cover craft elements such as setting, character, voice, descriptiveness, and editing. We'll discuss how to formulate ideas, how to engage the reader, knowing when to end, and how to create an effective 15-page structure. In this supportive environment, participants can work on existing or new writings. The workshop is taught by New York Times bestselling author and award-winning journalist Robbie Woliver who also teaches writing and journalism at Farmingdale State College. There is a $25 fee, payable at registration beginning Oct. 5 for South Huntington cardholders. Enrollment is limited.
  9. Meet the Author: Bernie Madoff & the Crisis

    Details : Dr. Colleen Eren, a South Huntington resident and professor of sociology, discusses her new book , Bernie Madoff and the Crisis (Stanford University Press), featuring interviews she conducted for over 4 years with Madoff from prison. She will examine our obsession with the Madoff case and its treatment in the media, and how this infamous Ponzi scheme case became a way for Americans to contend with larger social and economic issues like wealth inequality, regulation, and punishment of white collar crime. The book offers fresh insight into the 2008 financial crisis and Madoff, and what we have yet to learn from the case of the century. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
  10. Youth Employment Program

    Details : Looking for a job and don't know how to get started? Teens will learn how to look for a job, fill out an application and prepare for an interview. In addition, teens learn important skills for succeeding in a job. Project Excel counselors interview the students, check their references and refer them to local part time and odd jobs. Registration begins November 2.
