Books Take New Shape

[kindleWeb.jpg]

The South Huntington Library is kindling curiosity about a new reading format with the latest addition to our collection: the Kindle, a wireless reading device.

The Kindle, which weighs about 10 ounces and is 1/3-inch thick, is pre-loaded with about 40 book titles that can be read on a screen. Some of the titles have a "text-to-speech" feature that allows readers to listen along. Users can also change the size of the type to aid visually impaired readers.

To browse the preloaded titles, search the catalog for keyword "Kindle"; the books will be listed in the notes field. You can also search for a title to see if it's available for the Kindle.

The Kindle can be checked out by South Huntington cardholders only. The loan period is 14 days and it cannot be renewed. The overdue fine is $3 per day. Interested patrons may want to check out the Kindle to read the books, but it's also a fun way to "test-drive" the device if you're thinking of buying one for yourself or as a gift.

To check out a Kindle, please visit the Reference Desk.
