About the Gallery

[gallery.JPG]

The Alfred Van Loen Gallery is located on the lower level. Monthly exhibits are on display from September through May, with an indoor/outdoor sculpture exhibit in the summer.

The gallery is open to the public during regular library hours. The public is also invited to attend exhibit openings to meet the artists and be among the first to view the new artwork on display.

Mr. Van Loen was a longtime resident of South Huntington and the original curator of the art gallery at the former Melville Road library, where his goal was to promote young artists. He held the position from 1969-1976.

After he died in 1993, the library trustees named the library's Community Room, which doubled as the art gallery/exhibit space, in his memory. When that building closed and the Pidgeon Hill Road library building opened in 2004, the new gallery was named in his honor.

The current curator is Deborah Katz, who coordinates the monthly exhibits. For information and inquiries, you can contact her at shuntlib.curatordk@hotmail.com.
